As you may have guessed, the bellmen had to deal with a retired teacher’s conference last week, with mixed results.
No wonder kids today are so messed up.
RETIRED TEACHER: Can we have our bags put in Tammy Henderson’s car?
THE HOOK: You have to see the Valet Dept. for that, miss..
RT: But they sent us to you! (So much for that lesson on not interrupting!)
THE HOOK: All right, I’ll put the bags in the car for you ladies. Do you have the valet tag number?
RT: It’s Tammy Henderson’s car!
THE HOOK: I gathered that, miss, but I still need the tag number. We have almost 1000 rooms in the hotel. That means we have a lot of cars in the garage.
RT: Oh my!
And this was before 9 am!
The remainder of the morning found the bellmen fighting a losing battle against the hordes of retired teachers and their hearing loss and arthritic bones! Still, we manged to pull through and by the afternoon, something extraordinary happened…
The old biddies retired to the shadows and the generous seniors took centre stage!
We remained overwhelmed with requests for luggage storage, (at one point we had 25 calls and 4 carts left!) but almost everyone actually tipped, well! It’s a funny thing, working teachers are among the rudest and cheapest souls you’ll ever meet in the hospitality industry, but I guess they undergo a transformation in their golden years.
Of course, these ladies were the product of a kinder, gentler society which further explains the cultural differences. At the end of the day, though, once the damage was repaired and the debris was removed, things got back to normal and the usual class of douchebag returned. The teachers were a memory, or to be more accurate, a future blog post.
The rude old biddies still have no idea how close they came to seeing the White Light!

IMHO the working class tips the best as a valet all the other guys would jump on the new expensive cars and get stiffed or nothing at all and i would go for the beat up chevy and get a 20 spot .
That rules, doesn’t it?
The poorest souls always tip the best BECAUSE WE KNOW what it’s like down in the trenches! Kudos for not killing anyone.

the seniors who go to the ice cream shop where i work have always been my biggest tippers… they buy a 4 dollar ice cream , gives me $10, and change is mine. And this is always, like 100 % all the time.

At least some are nice though, they seem to out weigh out the bad. At least you got tipped. Just keep smiling, because you got more money in your pocket than you started out with. ha! Next time Old Biddies give you a hard time just act like you can’t hear them 😉 Another Great Post!

(or is that just a memory from my past… 😉 ) … a deep breath, and violence can be avoided, although the luggage cart could be of use should it prove too much, and a body needed to vanish. (been watching too much CSI ..!!!) xx

There’s no excuse for anyone being rude like that. But when it comes to teachers, I always wonder – did they screw up their students or did the students fry their teachers’ brains? 😉

Well, we needed some of those tippers where I used to work. Those cheap, old bastards were the worst! They’d run me ragged drinking away their pension, and then leave me a lousy fifteen cents or shit on the counter and act like they did me a favor, or something. The best tippers were old women and blue collar workers. Probably because the old women thought of me as the daughter they wished they had–I’m a suck-up–and the men wanted to do me. Who knows? Who cares? A tip is a tip after all!

i can remember the old school biddies enjoying wrapping your hands with a ruler and sitting at the front of the class with tweed skirts and their pink flanalette knickers round their knees for all to see thats why we got the hands wacked giggling at them lol a nightmare teachers stay hope you made plenty of tips i bet they drank lots tea and ate half coated choc bikkis all the time have fun hook xxjen

I recently stayed at a hotel that had mixed reviews. Many said the bellmen were rude. But otherwise their stay was good.
I found the bellmen not rude just young and with very little English! It was funny!
When I tried to tip him after bringing my bags to my room he nearly ran, but I chased him to the lift. Take the money or die!
We elderly are scary!

Not specific to this post, but great blog – It’s not difficult to treat people with respect (and tip!) but obviously it doesn’t happen as much as it should in the hospitality industry… Great insight into what goes on behind the scenes of hotels.

Ya know, after reading this post and the one about the “push mobiles,” I’m thinking that maybe it’s just an age thing. I recently took my parents (who are in their 70s) away for the weekend and you would think they had never stayed at a hotel before! Perhaps it had just been awhile? Anyway, my father kept insisting on loading his own luggage onto the “push mobile” and then ~ after finally being convinced that there were indeed people there who would gladly help him ~ he just walked away, assuming that they also had mental telepathy and knew exactly who he was and what room he was staying in. I watched the whole scene unfold from the front desk … the bewildered look on the poor guy’s face who was left holding my father’s luggage was priceless!

Your post titles have me cracking up, you could fill a book with all these stories! While I was searching for a job here in Costa Rica, hotels/hostels where the first thing on my list… I wanted to be a receptionist, but in reality I had no idea what I would be getting myself into. Well I guess I just wasn’t hotel material, but even if I would have done it for a week, I’m sure it would have been the most frustrating/rewarding/blog worthy material ever.
