A death in the (extended) family.

A mid-life crisis (or The Hook’s equivalent of one, at least).

Hordes of tourists, their behavioral dials set to “Are You Duckin’ Kidding me?” all over Niagara.

Various family crises.(IBS and IC have devastated my family these last few years.)

Parental drama. (The less said about this the better. I almost envy a wild animal’s young; at lest they get eaten before their suffering can really begin.)

The seemingly-endless parade of Trumpian circus performers, via CNN.

Exciting stuff, right? “Come for the awesome titles, stay for the brilliant content!”

My point – and I do have one – is this: the summer of 2017 has kicked my pasty white butt by hurling one challenge after another in my path. And so the wind simply isn’t hitting my creative sails these days, especially since they’re not unfolded.

The truth is, I’m tired.

All the way through to my bones.

So here’s a pic of Chelsea, via the Hamilton app my daughter downloaded last week. Sarah LOVES this software and so you can expect to see more of it’s greatness on this site in the future. It’s all about Lin’s creation/empire in our house these days, don’t you know. Not that I mind; I’ve never seen my kid as happy as she was when we attended a Hamilton performance in New York in April.

So enjoy this offering and please accept my apologies.

See you in the lobby, friends… eventually.

About The Hook

Husband. Father. Bellman. Author of The Bellman Chronicles. Reader of comic books and observer and chronicler of the human condition. And to my wife's eternal dismay, a mere mortal and non-vampire. I'm often told I look like your uncle, cousin, etc. If I wore a hat, I'd hang it on a hat rack in my home in Niagara Falls, Canada. You can call me The Hook, everyone else does.

  1. Aww sweet puppy… love to see doggy pics first thing in the morning!😙

  2. Lacey says:

I am sorry. I’ve been bone tired plenty too. I hope you find rest and rejuvenation soon. Thanks for sharing the picture 🙂

  3. There is no crime in wanting to play armadillo for a while. It’s called recuperation, and regrouping. BTW, armadillos are nasty shits, did you know that? Everybody needs to recharge their creative juices. Just don’t crawl as far back into the cave as I have. Thankfully, I’m married to a man who lives by two credos: Hold my beer, watch this shit; he needed killin’. My own daughter has held his beer while he’s hauled me out into the sunlight, kicking and screaming, I might add (Him, not me. I’m usually biting.) And, no. He hasn’t met anyone that needed killing…yet. If I bite him again, it may come down to that. But I have had all my shots. Hook, life can be a bitch sometimes. Take copious notes for future writing endeavors, enjoy your favorite libation as frequently as possible, hug your wife and daughter, dress up the dog in cyber-clothes, and call it good. Then be prepared to stand in the path of creative juices flooding your brain. They will. Trust me.

Chelsea pics are lovely while you rest a bit and get those creative juices flowing again!! Take good care.

  6. Chelsea looks so cute. I have to put her thoughts in here. “If you don’t remove this crown by the count of ten someone dies.”

  7. Oh dear. Heard of the Royal Borough of Kensington and CHELSEA? The place where that towerblock went off because of mismanagement, probable malfeasance? Possible corporate manslaughter?
I might rename the dog. Dogs don’t care. Throw them a stick or a ball, ‘Yeah yeah yeah. I’m a dog! Me me me! Throw a stick!’

  8. I know I would be loving that app too!
“Pardon me for asking sir, how long do you think these app shenanigans will be lasting?”
Hope things turn around sooner rather than later.

  9. Sorry you’re going through this stuff. Me too. The second I get back on my feet, ready to fight, something new–or the same–knocks me flat. Don’t give up, Hook!

  10. Ouch Hook. This is usually where I would suggest you rub some dirt on it and get back in the game, but sometimes, it’s best to just relax on the sidelines for a bit to catch your breath. And maybe create some cute doggie pics…

  11. umashankar says:

Sorry to find you in such a bebeothered state. But my own predicament can match those woes ounce for ounce. Talk about being bone-tired…

But then as the popular wisdom goes, this too shall pass. Do keep writing.

  12. Becky says:

Sorry that you’re going through a trying time. This summer’s been a strange one for me and my family too. Do what you need to do. Sending hugs to you and your family.

  13. You’re not alone. This spring and summer have been kicking my pasty white butt, too. Hang in there. Keep putting one foot in front of the next. And keep sharing cute photos. Sorry for your trials.

  14. Sorry, Hook… This is the (Chinese Zodiac) year of the Fire Rooster and they said there would be challenges. OMG did they ever get that right… It hasn’t let up all year. Keep on keeping on. Hugs.

  15. Tara says:

Well, here’s hoping that things improve as summer draws to a close and we hunker down for another fall and winter (and, quite possibly, another world war)…. (raising an invisible glass of water – though you can imagine something more potent if you like).

  16. Lacey says:

I just wanted to wish you a happy weekend and let you know you are featured on the Week in Review post on my blog today. I hope you are feeling better by now.
