5×5 With The Hook: Deanna Herrmann

Our guest today is so sassy and fearless you’d think she walked straight out of a 1960s sitcom starring Marlo Thomas.

But she didn’t – as far as I can tell, at least.

Here are some facts about Deanna Herrmann:

  • She is a contributing writer at Tipsy Lit, a ridiculously cool site featuring Ericka Clay’s gang of cute and talented literary rapscallions. (The link contains some of her best work so check it out or be subject to ridicule.)
  • It’s more than a tad cliché, but she has miles and miles of heart and it shows in her writing. I like that.
  • Her expat blog – yes, she’s one of those brave souls who actually travel beyond the world outside her window – is From Casinos To Castles, where it’s mostly expat life, mom life and recipes. It’s where her legend began.
  • I discovered and fell into non-vow-breaking-love with Deanna on My Muted Voice, a place all her own, where she can focus on her writing and of meet other great writers like Twindaddy.
  • Her work makes me smile.

Enough with the foreplay, it’s virtual Go Time!

1)  Your favorite John Cusack movie is…

Well, my knee-jerk reaction was Say Anything, because Lloyd Dobbler made me fall head over heels in love with John. And yes, I call him John, because we are on such good stalker-stalkee terms. But, when I actually thought about all of his movies that I adore, Grosse Pointe Blank would be my chosen favorite. Did you know John’s never married? He’s clearly waiting for me.

2)  The best thing about being in love?

Kissing. Oh….aside from the physical? 😉

Honestly, I think the best part is the winning combination of best friend and lover. In my experience, you have to have both. In my past marriages (yes, that’s plural), I always had one or the other. My first husband was my best friend and we had so much fun together….umm….outside of the bedroom. Now, my second husband was definitely not lacking in the bedroom department, but I’m not sure how we ever got there since he was such an ass. And now, the third time is most definitely the charm as I spend my days with my very best friend and my nights with my dream lover.

   TMI?

(There’s no such thing on this blog, young lady.)

3)  In your opinion, what is the best movie soundtrack of all time?

I actually had to search Google to refresh my memory on soundtracks, although Garden State was the first to come to mind. I don’t choose many soundtracks because they usually only have 2-3 songs that I like. Aside from Garden State, I do really love these: Footloose, Flashdance, Pretty in Pink and Pulp Fiction. In case you ever had any doubt, I’m a child of the 80’s. (As a teenager, I think I listened to the Reality Bites soundtrack a lot too)

Fun Fact:  If he finds himself at a wedding, Kevin bacon will pay the DJ to not play “Footloose” by Kenny Loggins, thus sparing himself the inevitable requests to recreate that particular moment in his life and career.

4)  Are there any reality shows you feel are actually worthy of your time or do you live in fear of their soul-crushing madness?

Definitely the second, especially when it comes to The Real Housewives, Toddler & Tiaras and others like them. However, not all reality shows are created equal and I do love the ones that are a bit less “dramatic” such as: Ice Road Truckers, Pawn Stars, Storage Wars, Bar Rescue and Restaurant Impossible. I also used to really love House Hunters and House Hunters International despite the truth that they are filmed after the fact. I just enjoy looking at real estate, especially in other cities and countries. Oh! Have you ever seen The Little Couple? I love that one too….they are so sweet!

Ok, maybe in actuality I am a reality show snob.

(Point of clarification: Anyone who is deluded kind enough to take part in 5×5 cannot be labelled a snob. And Bar Rescue rocks.)

5)  Your favorite black comedy (like Very Bad Things, for example) is…

I actually like Very Bad Things, but it wouldn’t come close to my favorite. I wasn’t even sure I liked black comedies until I did some more Googling and realized there are several that I love! I can’t choose a favorite when it comes to music or movies. I just love them all too much so instead, I’ll just list a few that come to mind: Heathers was a fave when I was growing up, Grosse Pointe Blank is also considered a black comedy, so you know that one had to be here, Pulp Fiction (duh), American Beauty, Natural Born Killers and American Psycho.

I better stop now. I own over 400 DVD’s so this girl could go on and on.

(Not to worry, Deanna, we’d keep up, wouldn’t we, kids?)

**************************************************************************************

Well, that’s all she wrote for today, my friends. I think we’ve all learned something today about Deanna, Kevin Bacon and of course, John Cusack. This has been fun, hasn’t it? My thanks to my guest today for bringing yet another smile to my face. You rock, Deanna.

See you in the lobby, folks…

  1. Nadia says:

Deanna, you have an expat blog? This expat needs to check it out. As for reality shows, I wasn’t sure whether to laugh or cry last week when I saw an ad for ‘My teen is pregnant and so am I’. Viva show snobs.

    • Hi Nadia! Yes, I do and I think maybe you already checked it out today. Thank you for that! Omg, did you watch Teen Mom? That girl Farrah did a porn movie….seriously kids? Show snobs rock! 🙂

  2. Four n’s, three a’s and two r’s! I’ll super-size my name, please!

How can I get a gang of cute and talented literary rapscallions? I want one, too! Where’s my piece of the pie? Where’s my sandy beach?

Grosse Pointe is number one. C’mon.

Did you know that Facebook can look at algorithms and tell when two people are about to fall in love? How friggin’ scary is that? That a piece of software can tell you what’s going to happen in your life BEFORE IT HAPPENS?

A great soundtrack to run to is Wang Chung’s To Live and Die In L.A. I’m serious.

    • Well thank goodness for the vowels mixing it up a bit, right?

      Tipsy Lit is hiring!

Are you saying you like it or think I’m crazy? Both are acceptable answers.

Well that’s on,y assuming you are both on facebook. 🙂

I may have to check that out, right after I Wang Chung tonight. 😉

  3. The Waiting says:

Deanna is a lovely lady who has crazy talent to boot. So glad to see her recognized for all she brings to the blogging community! Great interview, lady and gent! ;D

  4. 1jaded1 says:

This interview was so much fun. 🙂 Thanks guys!

  5. Another cool 5 x 5, Hook! So glad to meet you, Deanna. I am always amazed at how John Cusack never seems to age. One of my other fave movies of his is “American Sweethearts”. It had all the other stars I like in it too – Billy Crystal, Julia Roberts, and etc. Love that eating scene of Julia Roberts’ – my idea of a great time haha

    • Nice to meet you too, Shirley! Haha, I know! Well, at least in his movies. I saw a photo of him online the other day that shocked me a little, but in will never deny my love for him. 😉 yes! I’ve seen that one! I just heard I have a new one to watch called Adult World. I’m glad someone blogged about it as it’s easy to miss these things while living in another country. Glad you enjoyed the interview!

  6. Twindaddy says:

Deanna rocks. I’m glad to have met her. She is deserving of every bit of recognition she gets.

  7. Deanna Herrmann says:

Reblogged this on My Muted Voice and commented:
Well folks, look what’s happened to me…..I’ve been hooked! I couldn’t be more pleased that The Hook felt me worthy to take part in his 5×5 series. I always look forward to these posts of his because not only does he interview fantastic people, but the interviews themselves are always so unique and interesting. I hope you’ll stop by and say hello and definitely check out his blog if you aren’t already following.

Happy Wednesday! I know mine is better now. 🙂

    • T. Dawn says:

How did I miss this?? Congrats! Glad somebody got his “hooks” in to you…HA! That was so bad, I know, but the dumbest lines seem to make me laugh the hardest at midnight.

I’m so glad I’ve connected with you and your writing. I just loved learning a little bit more about you in this interview. Hook always makes things interesting (:

      • Haha! It’s ok, come of the corniest jokes are really funny. The one about the horse walking into a bar and the bartender says, why the long face?, always makes me giggle. I have no idea why.

Me too! It’s nice to be in a similar stage as another writer! Thank you and glad you enjoyed the interview!

  8. I absolutely love reading your interviews. It helps me discover so many new folks to read. Thanks so much. Deanna sounds awesome!

  9. TJLubrano says:

Yay! Now I got to know you a bit better as well, Deanna. 🙂 Loved this 5×5!

  10. I knew this girl is a good egg. A great post, and we were just talking about Cusack. We got John on the brain, Deanna. Great 5×5 post, and it allows us to get to know our fellow worldly bloggers.

  11. Hook, thank you so much for this great interview, the beautiful intro and the lovely things you said about me. I always look forward to your posts as well as your comments on my own site. It’s such a pleasure meeting such fun and kind-spirited people like yourself in the small world of the blogosphere.

    • The Hook says:

Our world is growing every second, Deanna, but that can only benefit those of us who love meeting new people, right?
Thanks again for lighting up my blog with your radiance.

  12. What a fun interview!! Really shows a lot of personality. You’ve definitely found your calling, or whatever you want to call it, in writing lol. Love all your work!

  13. Hello, Deanna H. After 5 x 5, what could possibly be next? Nobel Prize? Oscar?

Quite an accomplishment. Well done. Oh, have you ever heard of something called “weissbier?”

    • Haha! I’d settle for just finishing my novel or even being freshly pressed, but still, dare to dream.

Thank you, Nav. 🙂 Weizen? Yes…..yum! It’s really good when they serve it with a little banana juice, but then it’s like a meal.

  14. Veronica says:

I’ve got your husband #3 as my number 1, actually I hope it only ever stays that way, and I really need to watch more movies. And com I haven’t looked, where are you expat-ing from and to?

    • Aww, you’re lucky! You clearly made smart decisions. I definitely failed in that area, but if I hadn’t, I would’ve never met my husband and that would’ve been a tragedy. I’m an American living in Germany, my husband is German so this is most likely our permanent home.

  15. NotAPunkRocker says:

If I wasn’t already following her, I would do so now 🙂

    Another great one, Hook!

  16. kerbey says:

I like Kevin Bacon less now. : ( Cusack must be like Eric Stoltz, never having found a woman who could love him more than he loves himself. Glad the 3rd time is the charm.

  17. Jennie Saia says:

I love this series. I’ve known Deanna for a while, but now there’s ever more goodness to pore over. Awesome!

  18. Eva says:

    John Cusack is so dreamy.

  19. Katie says:

Oh my gosh, I love House Hunters, too. And International House Hunters blows my mind every time. I’ve learned to love the American bathroom more than any woman should.

    • Haha, you? I miss my bathroom in the states so much! I wish I could still watch House Hunters. I mean, I suppose I could on my laptop, but that’s just not convenient these days.

  20. El Guapo says:

Now I’m wondering what would happen if Kenny Loggins and Kevin Bacon were both at a wedding.

  21. Helena Hann-Basquiat says:

We may have a problem, darling – John Cusack is mine. Oh, and High Fidelity IS my life. ’80s soundtracks — I swear I think they made the soundtrack before they ever made the movie. Did you know that the ’80s band The Dream Academy did a cover of the Smiths’ Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want for Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (greatest movie ever made)? http://youtu.be/17ysGqMocbw
Black comedy: Swimming With Sharks — starring Kevin Spacey. Not much of a comedy, but an awesome movie. You also listed some of my favourites — American Beauty, American Psycho, American Graffiti (I know you didn’t mention that one, but I sensed a theme.)
Oh, and incidentally, I have that EXACT beer stein you’re drinking out of.
    MWAH, darling!

    • Helena I love you a little more now, but I’d still fight for John. I thought of High Fidelity too! I did not know that but I love that movie too. I haven’t seen Swimming With Sharks and I also like American Grafitti. 🙂

Well you couldn’t possibly have that EXACT one. 😉 Mwah, darling! Looking forward to your TL interview Friday!

  22. Lily says:

Nice answers girl! I too love me some Lloyd Dobbler. I guess I need to watch Grosse Point Blank though!

  23. Adam Ickes says:

Personally, I never liked John Cusack. Never understood the appeal.

  24. bethteliho says:

    *SQUUUEEEEEE*
I’m SO excited for you! It was FUN to learn more about you, Deanna! Now I LOVEADORE you even more, if that’s possible. You stalk Cusack like I stalk Levine. *stalker fist pump*

Oh and I have CRAZYMADLOVE for your answer about marriage. Incredibly true!! I’m lucky to have found that perfect combo as well.
    MWA XOXO

  25. bethteliho says:

Oh and Gross Pointe Blank and Pulp Fiction…YES. Just yes.

    • Beth your comments are just simply the best. Ok, now I have Tina Turner stuck in my head, but seriously, they make me smile and laugh every time! I can’t begin to imagine what an incredibly fun and free-spirited person you must be outside of the blogosphere….like real life. 😉

Oh and I never said I didn’t stalk Levine. (muahahaha) *stalker fist pump* back at ya!

  26. Aussa Lorens says:

Ahhhh John Cusak. Best voice ever. That’s interesting that he’s never married, hmmm….

Love that you mentioned American Beauty and American Psycho. Frakin’ love those movies.

Way to go on being hooked Ms. “I effortlessly maintain two kick-ass blogs like its nothing!”

    • He does have a great voice! Yum….ok, all this John talk is distracting.

American Psycho I think is the epitome of dark comedy for me. It was so disturbing that it was funny….the classic part of Christian Bale’s discography of Huey Lewis before he kills Jared Leto. I was laughing so hard and my husband looked at me like I was a lunatic. He didn’t find it funny, at all.

      Haha! Thank you! xx

  27. Deanna is lovely! Also my first instinct would be to choose Garden State for best soundtrack too! Twinsies! I haven’t checked out her My Muted Voice blog before so thanks for providing that info! I will make my way over there now!

    • Hi! Thanks for your nice words and checking out my other blog. Garden State really was pretty good….I’m going to have to listen to it today now, right after some Kenny Loggins. 😉

  28. Natalie DeYoung says:

Oh my gosh, we have so much in common! I thought I was the only person who knew about Grosse Pointe Blank! And dark comedies are my love language, srsly. 🙂

  29. That’s an assload of dvd’s girl! I love the three husbands thing and that giant beer in your hands that you clearly aren’t intimidated by? Wowzers, I nearly fell in love with you right there. Nice work, as always, Hook!

    • LOL! I know! It’s an addiction. My husband has made me start acquiring them digitally now. Glad you liked that and that beer was at a local Oktoberfest here in Germany. Go big or go home! 😉 Glad I could win you over…..I’m sneaky like that.

  30. So great to see Deanna on here, Hook. She rocks… whatever she’s doing! 😉 Garden State would get my vote; love it!

    • So cute that you posted this little video, Dawn! Thank you so much!

Soundtracks are hard! I was also going to mention Purple Rain, but strangely, I don;t have any recent ones I can think of. Most of them only have 1 maybe 2 songs I like.

      • I think the soundtrack to American Hustle is pretty great, and Warm Bodies (great movie! great music!). I do think we tend to remember the ones from when we were younger… but I’ve noticed a lot of great music lately.

  31. That’s a lot of blog love to check out. Where does she find the time? John Cusack is one of the best actors of all time (as is his sister Joan). It would be hard to pick a favourite for me. We love to binge watch “Bar Rescue”. I have way too many soundtracks, “Lost Boys”, and “Rush” are my favourites.

    • Well I definitely had to start an editorial calendar! 🙂 But My Muted Voice is where I spend most of my time. I like Joan as well and find it interesting that they star in so many movies together.

  32. curvyroads says:

Wow, I am so excited to have discovered Deanna before I saw her profiled (beautifully, I might add) in the 5×5! It was nice learning a little more about her here, though! Good job, as always, Hook!

  33. Hi Deanna~just popped over from Facebook & throwing poisoned darts of course (private joke guys sorry!) Well your absolutely brilliant & even more badass than we already knew. Inion’s bugging cuz she’s been in love with John Cusack for quite some time & yes, it was the movie Grosse Pointe Blank (which I’ve yet to see but have now put on my list of must see). So needless to say she’s lovin’ ya right now. We’re headed over straight way to check out your Expat Blog as well as Tipsy Lit and will leave you all with Yes, we’re fans of Deanna’s & the admiration is growing!! Great post guys!!
