Not only is it New Comic Book Day – I love being a nerd, but one that actually has sex on a semi-regular basis, that is – but I’m also a guest over at The Indie Chicks today.
The subject matter will be familiar to some of you, but unfortunately sometimes life has a way of forcing you to revisit subjects you thought buried. I’ve lifted some material from a previous post; I hope you’ll understand, guys. This one tore a hole in my soul and made me look back at a particularly dark night in my past.
I’m a different man now and so looking back isn’t quite so painful. I was lucky to have been able to walk away rather than succumb to the call of the abyss. Some people simply aren’t that lucky.

Moving post, Hook.
We are worrying over a neighbor kid who was like daughter’s clone. Wrapped in drugs and self destructive behavior with no family left. Can’t enable, but can’t watch her let go of that rail. Pretty hard.
It is gut-wrenching to watch someone self-destruct. Sometimes we just can’t see the slivers of light that are always present in the darkness.
“sometimes fate and Mother Nature become lovers” That line just sang. Good writing.

I don’t think it’s really possible to know funny as much as you do without having lived through some things to contrast it. It’s pretty wonderful that you rose up, so well, to life despite touching on such tragic despair – to all of our great benefit I might add. Another hell of a post Hook. Beautiful.

Thanks for the reminder to take care of those who feel they don’t belong in this world, whether it’s the friend next door, a stranger or yourself. A moving post, my friend. You have looked into the abyss and understand the agony of those who do the same. No life should be felt so worthless that it needs to end. We all have a responsibility to find the best in every human being we come across in our lives, especially encourage those who feel lost. Really touching words.

Hi Hook. I know it’s been a couple of days since your post, but I’ve finally had a chance to look at it. (I just moved into my dorm and have spend the last few days up to my elbows in boxes.)
Annoying preamble aside, your post was very heart wrenching. Although I don’t have any personal experience with depression, I do know several people who know it all too well. I myself suffer occasionally from anxiety (undiagnosed, though). Thank you for reminding us that depression is a battle that should not be fought alone and that we can do something to help those who have strayed off into the dark, that there is hope for their return.
There is always hope, my friend.
